Minority aides to assist Indias earthquake sufferers

March 20, 2001

Four teams of minority aides will travel throughout South Complex dorms Wednesday to help provide relief to earthquake victims in India.

“We’ll be going through all of the dorms, collecting clothing items and pop cans,” said Michael Oden, the complex coordinator for minority aides in South Complex dorms.

The students will gather items from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit western India on Jan. 26, killing 20,000 people and injuring more than 160,000.

The group is not the first at MSU to reach out to India earthquake victims. In February, the MSU India Club teamed up with the American Red Cross to raise money toward providing earthquake relief.

Oden, a supply chain management senior, said although the massive earthquake hit in another part of the world, the impact could be felt by people in local communities as well.

“There are a lot of people with family in India and a lot of people in the United States and at Michigan State who were affected or devastated by this incident,” he said.

It’s an important endeavor for the minority aides, who planned the drive as their major project for the semester, Oden said.

“This is a way to give back to the community,” he said. “Not just the MSU community, but the community at large.

“If something like this were to happen in the United States, I think most people would want other countries to help as much as possible. The same thing applies here.”
