Guns dont kill people, bullets do

With regard to Spiros Gallos’ argument (“Cartoon’s idea was ignorant,” SN 3/14) that stated it is not guns that kill people, I am troubled by his logic.

Yes, let’s remember guns don’t kill people, bullets do. Well, it’s actually the sharp tip of a small projectile being fired at a very high speed into the soft flesh of another human being. Theoretically, a child could fire any small object (say, a pencil) at a very high speed (say, the speed of light) and it could do just as much damage. Yet, we wouldn’t outlaw pencils and light, now would we? Guns make the killing process easy.

“But he could have brought a knife to school,” is another pro-gun argument. It ignores that a knife requires a great deal of strength and passersby have a chance to run away or fight back.

Guns make the killing process more efficient.

Whether you believe handguns should be made available to the general public, you can’t ignore that guns are killing machines that enable people who would otherwise be unable to murder do so.
