ASMSU to boycott if CATA raises fare

Bussing system argues prices are reasonable

March 21, 2001

The ASMSU Student Assembly will be considering a measure Thursday calling on the Capital Area Transportation Authority to not raise the cost of bus rides for MSU students.

“If they increase the prices, students will be less inclined to use the buses,” said Quinn Wright, a College of Communication Arts and Sciences representative for the Student Assembly. “I think CATA should understand by raising rates, it\'s not only going to hurt students, it’s going to hurt CATA as well.”

Last month, CATA announced it was considering an increase in ride prices for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities from 25 cents to 50 cents. CATA’s board will be voting on the increase today.

ASMSU Programming Board Comptroller Matt Santala said the increase could cause more problems for students commuting to campus in CATA buses.

“I don’t think the university should allow them to do that,” he said.

But, CATA Executive Director Sandy Draggoo said ASMSU’s proposal would be easier said than done.

“For us that would be something quite difficult,\" said Draggoo. “It would certainly put on an added burden.”

The proposed measure, which was composed by Santala and Wright, states that the undergraduate student government will promote a boycott of CATA, if the bill is passed and the conditions are not agreed upon.

“I would sure hope that wouldn’t be the case,” Draggoo said.
