Rogers named majority deputy whip

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers R-Brighton, has been named the majority deputy whip in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rogers, who started his term in January, noted in written statement that it is rare for a freshman to be named to the leadership position.

He will be responsible for representing the upper-Midwest and the freshman class among Republican leadership.

Rogers also submitted testimony Wednesday to the House Budget Committee, urging consideration of his proposal for a federal tax-free college and technical education savings accounts. He introduced a similar program while in the Michigan Senate.

Bill combats aquatic pests

Legislation aimed at protecting Michigan waterways from exotic species, such as zebra mussels, was introduced in the state House Wednesday by Rep. Lauren Hager , R-Port Huron.

If passed, the bill would create a pilot project for monitoring and sterilization of the ballast of salt and fresh water vessels.

Hager said in a written statement that the legislation would help shipping companies avoid disrupting the Great Lakes ecosystem.

Hager said Michigan can not wait for the federal government to make the improvements if residents want to protect the lakes for future generations.

Courts could issue consecutive sentences

A bill introduced in the state Senate Wednesday would allow courts to issue consecutive prison sentences to a person convicted of causing multiple deaths during a driving felony.

State Sen. William Van Regenmorter, R-Georgetown Twp., introduced the bill to change current Michigan law that allows the sentences to be served at the same time.

Current law significantly reduces the consequences for those who kill while driving drunk or under a suspended license, Regenmorter said.
