Laws should not ban gay marriage

Rishi Kundi’s article on gay marriage was excellent and indirectly addresses a major problem with some laws today, including the violation of separation of church and state (“Gay marriage not complex issue to understand,” SN 1/31).

It makes sense religious objection should dictate whether same-sex couples are married by a priest in a church that condemns homosexuality. However, laws should not be on the books that prevent same-sex couples from getting a marriage license down at city hall and having a justice of the peace perform a civil wedding. To legally block that because many religious people are opposed to it violates separation of church and state.

As long as the marriage involves two consenting adults, no one should dictate to anyone who he or she can marry. Think about how many mixed-race marriages would have never happened if ultraconservative lawmakers had their way.
