DCL to sponsor career conference

February 15, 2001

The MSU-Detroit College of Law will be sponsoring Career Conference 2001 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. today.

The conference will allow students at DCL to meet with prospective employers and learn about various career options.

Caryn Mateer, director of Career Services at DCL, said the event will be helpful to students entering the work force.

“It’s very important that our students have access to government and public interest employers from across the state,” she said. “Last year was the first year and students felt it was very eye-opening for them.”

Mateer said there will be a variety of options to explore.

“We have employers ranging from the Federal Bureau of Investigation where they can work as a special agent to working for a large private firm,” she said.

Co-sponsoring the event are the Ingham County Bar Association and legal fraternity Phi Alpha Delta.

Roger Lee, president of Phi Alpha Delta, said the event helps students get a jump start on their careers.

“It’s important to be able to network with other attorneys, people practicing in the field, and to get a general synopsis of what’s going on,” the third-year law student said.

The event will feature panel presentations and a career fair for students to discuss employment.

Mateer said the panel presentations are already booked, but DCL students who did not register in time are still free to talk to recruiters during the career fair portion of the conference.

H. Daniel Beaton Jr., an assistant attorney general with the Michigan Attorney General’s office, will be among the presenters. Beaton, a 1990 graduate of the law school and president of DCL’s Alumni Association, said he’s looking forward to discussing career options with students.

“I hope that (speaking to students) will give them more confidence in understanding my perspective on what they will be facing in the job market,” he said. “There are so many things you can do with your law degree.”
