RHA seeks staff for annual conference

January 29, 2001

The Michigan State University Residence Halls Association is seeking volunteers for the Michigan Organization of Residence Hall Associations leadership conference at MSU on March 23-25.

The conference is an annual event to provide opportunities for student leaders across the state to network and develop leadership skills.

“MOHRA consists of programs put on for students by students, who have the opportunity to learn from each other by participation,” Jenny Richardson, who co-chairs the conference, said.

“Volunteers get to meet other MSU students and students from across the state; it will be fun to see what goes on at a conference, and you might even want to get involved in RHA and MOHRA,” the communication senior said.

About 60 to 70 volunteers are needed to assist with role call, checking in and directing delegates, security, concessions, and various other activities. More than 250 students from 10 schools around the state will attend the conference, which also marks the first time the conference will be hosted by MSU.

Volunteers are required to work in two hour blocks, beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 23 to about 4 a.m. Sunday, March 25.

“If you haven’t seen on-campus student government at work, the conference is great exposure to witness this as well as the student government of other schools,” conference co-chair and civil engineering senior Ian Weibel said.

“Participation brings a lot of people out of their shells, and helps develop leadership ability.”

Human resource management sophomore Ebon Pinson said volunteering in the 2000 conference in March was one of the best experiences he’s had at MSU.

“One of the main reasons I volunteer is because I like to get involved,” Pinson said. “MORHA is a leadership conference - it gives you a chance to expand your leadership abilities and expand yourself.”

The theme of this year’s conference is dubbed “Leave Your Mark Among the Stars,” in the spirit of Hollywood.

“By volunteering, you get to experience and witness different programs, bring ideas to MSU, and have a lot of fun,” Pinson said.

In addition to staffing responsibilities, volunteers are able to attend other social events at the conference.

Those interested in volunteering for the conference should e-mail event coordinators at mohra01@hotmail.com. The deadline to sign up is Friday, March 2.
