Relief effort sought for quake victims

January 23, 2001

Members of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternidad Inc., a Latino greek organization, are sponsoring a relief effort for survivors of a Central American earthquake.

A 7.6-magnitude quake ripped through El Salvador on Jan. 13, killing at least 707 people, injuring almost 3,700, destroying more than 141,000 homes and forcing nearly 68,000 people to evacuate.

The earthquake was felt across El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and as far north as Mexico City.

Marketing junior Claudio Juarez, a member of Phi Iota Alpha, said the fraternity’s MSU chapter will join in the relief project as part of a nationwide effort by the organization.

“We believe that since we are a Latino fraternity, it is our duty as an organization and as a commitment to our community to help out,” he said.

Members of the organization are accepting items suggested by the El Salvadorian Consulate such as monetary donations, blankets, water, aspirin, flashlights, medicine, Pepto-Bismol and disinfectants.

Anyone interested in aiding the El Salvador relief effort should contact Claudio Juarez at juarezcl@msu.edu.
