E.L. City Council set to approve final business relocation in City Center site

January 16, 2001

The East Lansing City Council will likely approve relocating the last business on the site of the City Center project at today’s regular meeting.

The East Lansing Planning Commission referred moving BW-3 from its location on 220 M.A.C. Ave. to within the $35 million City Center Project with unanimous support at its Jan. 10 meeting.

The project that will house the restaurant is a combination of a 706-space parking structure, retail and office space.

BW-3 owner Kent Ward said he is excited about the potential move and the idea of having windows.

“We’re glad to be a part of the new City Center development,” Ward said. “It’s a beautiful building and we’re positive about it.

“We’ll be glad to get out of the basement.”

The restaurant plans to close down and begin moving in April, when city officials plan to demolish the building, and reopen at its new location in the first week of May.

The council will also be asked to approve a liquor license and an entertainment license for televisions, billiard tables and video games at the restaurant.

In other business, council members will review their actions from the Jan. 8 meeting when they approved the expenditure of $1.16 million for the Hannah Community Center. The Christman Co., the construction manager of the project, will use the money for the structure and finish of the building, including everything from paint to food service equipment.

“This is a big step forward,” Councilmember Bill Sharp said. “This will finish off the interior. We’ve awarded about 95 percent of the contracts for the interior, so we’re spending the money.”
