Attorney Generals life threatened in letter

January 29, 2001

Michigan Attorney General Jennifer Granholm’s life was threatened via a letter last week before she made a scheduled speech in Chesterfield Township.

A threat assessment was done by the Michigan State Police in conjunction with the Warren Police Department, and it was determined that there was no danger. Granholm delivered the speech Thursday as scheduled, Michigan State Police Capt. Jack Shepherd said. There were no disturbances at the event.

The threat was taken seriously, and all leads were followed and the case is closed, Shepherd said.

“No individual has taken credit for authoring the letter,” he said.

A group called the “South Warren Streeters” was associated with the letter, and Shepherd said “public figures get letters like this occasionally.”

Officials from the attorney general’s office downplayed the threat.

“These things happen all the time,” Genna Gent, a spokeswoman for Granholm, said. “This is an old hat and she is certainly not frightened.

“These things happen to her and other top law enforcement officials.”

Granholm felt the death threat was an “act of cowardliness,” said Gent, who believes the threat was written to gain publicity.
