On-campus media assist food bank during holidays

December 9, 2000

WKAR-TV and Radio will help feed the hungry this holiday season by serving as a collection site for donations to the Greater Lansing Food Bank.

The food drive will continue through Dec. 15, and donations can be delivered to the box in the south lobby of the Communication Arts and Sciences building. All food must be nonperishable and packaged in a box, can or cellophane wrapper.

Sharon Krinock, the executive director for the food bank, said food drives are a big help to the organization’s cause. The Greater Lansing Area Food Bank serves more than 1,400 families a month in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties.

“There are at least 35 food drives going on as of today,” Krinock said. “They’re all important, and we do put it all to good use.”

Krinock said the majority of the food goes to “the working poor” and more than 50 percent of the food recipients are children. The food bank always accepts donations of food, money and time. Volunteers are necessary to keep the food pantries running, Krinock said.

Items the food bank particularly needs this holiday season are cereal, boxed dinners, juice, chili, beef stew, tuna, peanut butter, soup, powdered baby formula, cookies, boxed dessert mixes, coffee, tea and other beverages.

The food bank also collects tissue, toilet paper, soap, paper towels and personal products.
