Gore lost race fair and square

In regards to the letter “Gore should not concede election” (SN 12/1), I have some problems with it. Christine Timmon accuses George W. Bush’s brother and the admittedly-Republican Secretary of State of rigging the election.

Jeb Bush is not empowered to change the election. The secretary of state stayed within her legal authority. The states where votes were questioned are run by Democrats, not Republicans. How George W. Bush rigged the election there I cannot fathom.

In fact, Bush has not taken the presidency from anyone. The current president is Bill Clinton. If one says Bush is taking the election from Al Gore, then it should be noted that after Florida declared Bush the winner, Gore demanded recount after recount. He wished to interfere. Most of the Bush lawsuits were simply to block Gore’s.

I’m also interested in the idea of “the interest of dignity and justice.” Would it not be more dignified to end this process now? A continued duel, especially when one candidate or another is trying to exceed his own power, guarantees less dignity for everyone.

We don’t have a “throne.” No one has said exactly how the election has been rigged, and the actions of Michiganians are never an indicator of Floridian behavior. If I am wrong, I wish to learn and correct my faulty knowledge.
