Eleven sororities competed on the gridiron of Spartan Stadium on Saturday in the annual Theta Chi powder puff football tournament

All proceeds benefited the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The games were formatted in a single-elimination round-robin tournament. Sororities played seven-on-seven flag football, winner take all.

Theta Chi member Mike Tietema, a supply chain management junior, coordinated the event.

“There was a lot of competition out there,” Tietema said. “I think everyone had a great time.”

Tietema refereed the contests.

“Everything went real well, we’re very pleased with how it turned out,” he said. “I think this tournament is only going to get better and better in the years to come.”

Tietema said the greeks came very close to reaching their goal of raising $1,000 for the hospital.

Sarah King, regional representative for the hospital, said staff members are very pleased with how hard the greeks have worked to help their cause.

“MSU students have worked with us before on many different projects,” King said. “The students put forth a great effort, and we are very pleased with how the event turned out.”

The Alpha Chi Omega squad defeated last year’s champs, the Kappa Alpha Thetas, for the powder puff title in a dramatic overtime finish.

Steve Tole, a Theta Chi member and international relations junior, said it was a storybook finish for the team he coached.

“It was a great time, and considering the fact that none of our girls had ever played organized football like this before, we put out a great team,” Tole said. “We could be looking at a dynasty, hopefully we’ll be back to defend the title next year.”

Billy Molasso, assistant director of Student Life and greek adviser, braved the chilly autumn weather to watch the day’s events.

“I think it went great, and I’m very proud of how well the tournament was organized,” Molasso said. “There was a huge crowd out there, a lot of parents came to see their kids play.

“It was a great day for the girls and the greek system as a whole.”
