ASMSU plans Florida visit, will discuss ways to improve campus IM facilities

November 21, 2000

ASMSU is going to Disneyworld - well, members will be in the same vicinity anyway.

Two representatives from the university’s undergraduate student government will be accompanying Rick McNeil, the assistant director of Intramural Sports and Recreative Services, to Orlando, Fla. for the 2000 Athletic Business Conference on Nov. 30.

The reason behind ASMSU’s venture is to gain more knowledge on what will be required in the process of trying to improve the university’s recreational facilities, said Kendall Sykes, who serves as Student Assembly chairperson. Intramural Sports is paying for the trip.

ASMSU established an initiative earlier this month to possibly renovate the three intramural facility building or construct a new student recreation facility. The issue first arose last November when students approached ASMSU officials with IM Sports-West concerns.

“We are going to talk with the different agencies that have done this before,” said Sykes, who was selected along with Brent Beuschel, the Eli Broad College of Business representative for Student Assembly, for the trek to Florida.

Among the issues to be focused on by the conference attendants include how long the renovation or construction would take, what requirements would need to be met, and what possibilities there are outside of funding to try to prevent any student fee increase. Sykes said they also hope to get an idea of how they can remedy the poor conditions.

Since it was an event he goes to every year, McNeil figured it would be an ideal situation for ASMSU to become more educated in improving recreational facilities. He approached the Student Assembly in October with the proposal of improving the recreational structures.

“This is for the simple process of becoming more knowledgeable in the basic issues,” McNeil said. “I think it is important to get educated and informed in the whole process.”
