Today’s game at Bowling Green will give the MSU men’s soccer team a chance to ride the coattails of a six-game winning streak into next week’s Big Ten Tournament in Columbus, Ohio.

Sunday’s 2-0 shutout versus Wisconsin gave MSU its longest winning streak since 1998, when they also won five straight.

MSU head coach Joe Baum said he wants to end the season with a win so the team can contain its level of confidence going into the Big Ten Tournament.

“I think we got a little momentum going now,” Baum said. “The team’s feeling like they’re playing some decent soccer, we just want to maintain that feeling right now.”

Baum said it may be a challenge preparing for their final game today, since the team is a bit worn out with only a day of rest between games.

“Bowling Green is a good team, they’re 8-7 and they won their last two games,” Baum said. “We’re going down there, we’re a bit tired but I think if we just present this as one last regular season challenge to this team (and) let them know that we have to get up and get ready to play (one more time) before this tournament.”

MSU senior goalie T.J. Lieckfelt has played a significant role in the team’s winning streak.

Lieckfelt, a candidate for Big Ten Player of the Year, posted three and a half shutouts in the conference this season while only allowing two goals against Big Ten opponents.

Lieckfelt said the Wisconsin win Sunday had added meaning since he had never beaten them before. He said he is looking to knock off Bowling Green, the other team he has never defeated. He also added that it is imperative to win the last game of the season.

“It’s really important to keep the momentum going, you just assume you’re going to win everything,” Lieckfelt said. “We’re looking at (the Bowling Green game) as a really tough game and we just got to keep rolling.”
