Family offers reward for E.L. beating information

October 6, 2000

The family of a man severely beaten outside of an East Lansing eatery is offering a $500 reward for information about their son’s attacker.

Brandon D’Annunzio, a 24-year-old Livonia resident, is in stable but critical condition at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital. He is suffering from severe head trauma with a blood clot in his brain and a fractured skull.

He is being treated at Sparrow’s Neurological Intensive Care Unit.

Jennifer Martino, an MSU alumna and friend of D’Annunzio, said police only have one witness to the event, and she hopes the reward might help bring more people forward.

“(That area) is such a popular bar spot in East Lansing, and I know there were people who must have saw what happened,” she said. “This could have been anyone’s friend.”

Martino plans on posting fliers throughout campus and East Lansing, but rain kept her from posting them Thursday.

East Lansing police Capt. Juli Liebler said posting fliers can help in the apprehension of a subject.

“We’re still looking for suspects, and we’re just trying to get information out,” she said. “If people find out the person is seriously injured, someone might be more likely to call in since it’s just not a regular fight.”

Liebler said fights do break out from time to time, particularly when bars let out. However, “They usually are not to the point as this one was,” Liebler said.

D’Annunzio was in East Lansing for Martino’s fiancé’s bachelor party at BW-3, 220 M.A.C. Ave. Saturday night. When he left the bar he was assaulted by an unknown suspect.

East Lansing police responded to an altercation outside BW-3 at approximately 12:40 a.m. When police arrived on the scene, they found D’Annunzio lying on the sidewalk alone. Witnesses say he was assaulted by a white male about 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall and 195 pounds with shoulder-length brown hair.

The suspect was last seen wearing a black leather jacket and was seen with four other males and a white female. The woman is described as having long brown hair and was last seen wearing a jacket with yellow or orange lettering.

Police said they do not know of a motive in the attack.

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to contact the East Lansing Police Department at 337-2599 or 1-877-ELPD-TIP.
