E.L. board positions to be filled, all can apply

October 13, 2000

The City of East Lansing is looking for residents to fill positions on a number of advisory boards and commissions.

People on boards such as the planning commission, the zoning board of appeals, the housing commission and the commission on the environment have the opportunity to bring their expertise to the East Lansing City Council, Mayor Pro Tem Beth Schwarze said.

“What those boards do is advise the city council on the way policy should be shaped,” Schwarze said. “They’re basically all advisory bodies, an opportunity for people who live in town to get involved in areas that interest them or areas they have expertise in.”

Although some of the commissions can be filled by anyone in the city, others have specific requirements or have to be filled by people in certain professions, Schwarze said.

Students are eligible for the positions as long as they live in the city, Schwarze said.

Board and commission appointments are three-, four- or six-year terms.

Applications are due to the city council by 5 p.m. Oct. 25. Appointments to the boards and commissions will be made by the council in late December.

A separate application must be filed for each board or commission a resident applies for.
