Clock chimes to add Homecoming cheer

October 11, 2000

This Homecoming weekend, visitors to the downtown area might hear a pair of familiar tunes chiming from the city’s new Central Clock Tower.

The tower, on the corner of Albert and M.A.C. avenues, will be playing the MSU fight song and “Shadows” throughout the weekend.

The clock tower upgrade was made possible by the donation of a computer chip containing the two songs from the MSU Alumni Association. Keith Williams, executive director of the alumni association, presented the chip during a ceremony Monday to Envision East Lansing co-chairs Liz Schweitzer and Howard Ballein. The chip will be installed in time for the upcoming weekend festivities, said Judith Taran, director of communications for the city of East Lansing.

“The clock tower is one of the more visible pieces in attempt to keep downtown a vital and accessible shopping area for the people in the Mid-Michigan areas,” Taran said.

Taran said the songs will most likely continue to play in the tower, at least during home games. No definite schedule or arrangement has been set for the songs, however.

“I think the donation of the computer chips to the city is a wonderful gesture,” said university spokesman Terry Denbow. “It’s a strong approach in joining the community with the traditions we have established here at Michigan State.”

Dedication of the clock tower took place Sept. 25. City officials consider the clock tower to be an important piece of the Envision East Lansing project. The project is a city initiative to beautify the city and continue to attract retailers and customers to the area, Taran said.
