Career workshop provides networking, résumé tips

October 6, 2000

Spanish and international relations junior Shigei Gebremedhin realized while some students are preparing résumés and attending career fairs, others are without direction.

So she and the other minority aides from the Brody Complex thought a career workshop might prove more beneficial for some students.

“That’s why we’re here, to offer academic support and to make students more aware of the resources available to them on campus,” said Gebremedhin, an MA in Emmons Hall.

The workshop, “The Realities of a Career in Your World,” will be presented by Lenroy Jones, assistant director of MSU Career Services.

The workshop will be presented in Multi-Purpose Room A in Brody Hall at 7 p.m. Thursday. Jarod Pratt, Brody Complex coordinator, said the decision to host a workshop was a practical one.

“We just wanted to do something different,” he said. “We wanted it to be something that would be a little more beneficial to the students than a party or ‘The Dating Game’ or something like that.”

The workshop is designed to introduce students to career counseling and other resources available to them on campus, and to acquaint them with the assistance MSU Career Services provides.

Hospitality business sophomore Kathie Hooper said underclassmen might be able to benefit from having a well-written résumé - one of the skills scheduled to be taught Thursday.

“If you have a résumé your freshman year, it’s a lot easier to just add on to it than it is to start from scratch,” she said.
