Airplane crash survivors remain in area hospital

A couple involved in Wednesday night’s plane crash in Meridian Township remain hospitalized.

The crash landed Lansing residents Bob and Kathy Boyd at Sparrow Hospital where he Boyd remains in critical condition. His wife Kathy remains in fair condition as of 5 p.m. Thursday, Sparrow Hospital officials said.

Returning from a trip to Pennsylvania, the couple crashed in a Meridian Township subdivision at about 9:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Bob Boyd, the 55-year-old pilot of the single engine plane, is an experienced aviator who works as the director of maintenance for the Capital City Airport, 4100 Capital City Blvd. in Lansing, said Robert Kolt, spokesman for the airport.

Both survivors were conscious as the Jaws of Life were used to pull them from the wreckage.

The couple’s dachshund escaped major injury and was taken to MSU Small Animal Clinic for examination and treatment.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, but Boyd reported to the Capital City Airport control tower that he was low on fuel minutes before the plane went down.

The Federal Aviation Administration will be conducting a full investigation.
