Mason sentenced to almost 22 years for 1999 arson
The Ohio woman who pleaded guilty to setting Agriculture Hall on fire in 1999 was sentenced to almost 22 years in prison Thursday. Marie Mason, 47, of Cincinnati, said she committed the arson with her then-husband Frank Ambrose on New Year’s Eve, 1999. She said the two set the offices of the Agriculture Biotechnology Support Project on fire to protest federally funded research on genetic modification of potatoes.

Soon, lab animals might not spend their entire lives in the laboratory. Thanks to one student and a mistake in a shipment of hamsters to an MSU lab for a research project, the university might create an official policy for placing rodents unneeded for research up for adoption.
Ernest Hemingway's daughter-in-law to sign books in Lansing
Valerie Hemingway, the former secretary to Ernest Hemingway, who later married his son Gregory, will visit the Library of Michigan, 702 W. Kalamazoo St., in Lansing, at 5 p.m. Wednesday for a book signing, followed by a presentation to promote a program called The Great Michigan Read.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park On the northern coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is one of the state’s most beautiful landmarks. The Tahquamenon River and its falls are at the center of the state park which is nearly 50,000 acres. While staying in the park, you can go canoeing, hiking, fishing and hunting. Rental boats also are available. Campgrounds range from rustic sites to sites with electrical service and functioning restrooms. The cost ranges from $2 per person for a rustic site to $23 for a modern site.

Fisheries and wildlife associate professor John Schwartz said he loves getting close to nature. He owns a cabin on an island in the Florida Keys and calls himself an avid hunter. He has traveled to every state in the U.S. and 36 other countries, including student trips he led into Nepal and northern India. When he’s not traveling the globe, he teaches a class about outdoor preparedness. “I teach the class because I enjoy this kind of thing,” he said.
