Eric Gregory’s columns are my favorite part of The State News. He upholds the university tradition of intellectual creativity by writing thought-provoking pieces. When I read Gregory’s most recent article, Principles of the middle ground (SN 11/15), I almost thought “Way to go Gregory, you did it again.” But when I read further, my thoughts changed to “Ugh, he picked the wrong candidate.”

I wish I hadn’t started reading The State News Monday morning; I was in a great mood. After all, it is the start of one of my favorite holiday seasons of the year — which I try to prolong for weeks with decorating, baking, cooking and socializing (which includes eating) with friends and family.

I was a vocal supporter of the Iraq war during its initial stages and into 2005 and believed with conviction in the stated goal of bringing democracy to the Middle East. I agreed that Saddam Hussein was a dictator against whom force was justified. I cheered when we took Baghdad and dismissed the skeptics’ claim that we were merely in it for the oil. With this admission, I join a significant portion of policy makers, government leaders and the American intelligentsia who were duped.

As the 2007 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Selection Show announced it was down to the final 12 teams for the NCAA Tournament, the chatter among the MSU men’s soccer team began to subside, and nervous glances toward one another filled the room.

During MSU’s postgame celebration, an elated group of Spartan football players ran over to the student section of Spartan Stadium, trading chants back and forth with the fans. “That was electric,” junior quarterback Brian Hoyer said following MSU’s 35-31 win over Penn State on Saturday. “It was probably, to this point, my best memory at Michigan State.”

A waste can, a foot bridge and two trees near the Main Library were spray-painted last week, causing an estimated $500 worth of damage, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. A 42-year-old university employee reported that the waste can and foot bridge were spray-painted black and green sometime between 4 p.m. on Nov. 9 and 8 a.m. on Nov. 12, McGlothian-Taylor said. The same employee said initials had been spray-painted on the two 100-year-old trees located near Beal Botanical Garden sometime between 4 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday, McGlothian-Taylor said. There are no suspects in the vandalizations.
