Hockey swept by Penn State on the road

January 17, 2015

MSU hockey (7-11-2, 1-3-2-2 Big Ten) was unable to cap off its trip to Penn State this weekend. The Spartans dropped a 5-2 contest to the Nittany Lions on Saturday night, after taking a 2-1 lead into the second period. Junior goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped 35 shots for MSU, just one night after being forced to make 50 saves in a 2-2 tie.

PSU opened up the scoring in the game, as Casey Bailey tallied an unassisted goal. After Nittany Lion goaltender Matthew Skoff made a nice save to deny the Spartans a goal, freshman defender Carson Gatt mishandled the puck at the blue line to let Bailey skate in on a breakaway.

MSU responded quickly though, when sophomore forward Villiam Haag netted his fourth goal of the year and second in as many nights. With the Spartans on a power play, Haag let a slap shot go from near the blue line that was deflected and beat Skoff on the blocker side.

Junior forward and captain Michael Ferrantino gave the Spartans a lead late in the first period at the 19:37 mark. After junior defenseman Travis Walsh let an innocent looking shot go from the point, Ferrantino jumped on the rebound and roofed a shot past Skoff to make the score 2-1. Haag was also credited with an assist on the play. It was the second night in a row that MSU was able to regain a lead in the final minute of the first period.

It was all PSU for most of the second period, and defenseman Nate Jensen finally capitalized at 15:01 after a big scrum in front of the net that left Hildebrand scrambling to get up. Just 2:21 later, David Goodwin scored for PSU to give the Nittany Lions their first lead of the game.

Taylor Holmstrom and Bailey added to that lead early in the third period. Holmstrom redirected a shot near the face off circle that deflected off Hildebrand and into the net. Just 59 seconds later, Holmstrom made a cross-ice pass on a 3-on-1 break that found Bailey, who had an open net to bury his second goal of the game. After heading into the third period on a power play trailing by one goal, MSU found itself down 5-2 less than three minutes into the final frame.
