MSU trails Maryland 40-26 at halftime

January 17, 2015

At halftime, Maryland leads MSU 40-26.

MSU freshman forward Javon Bess started the game in place of junior guard Bryn Forbes and much like the first meeting between the two teams, offense was hard to come by in the early minutes.

Freshman guard Melo Trimble knocked down a three to put Maryland on the board first before senior forward Branden Dawson answered with a two for the Spartans.

After just four minutes, junior forward Denzel Valentine was the only MSU starter still in the game, as the Spartans went to their bench early.

Junior forward Matt Costello scored four of MSU’s first eight points and helped MSU find its footing offensively and the Spartans went on a seven point run to take a 9-5 lead at the 13:06 mark. Maryland bounced right back with a run of its own, using nine straight points to swing the game and take a 14-10 lead.

The half turned into a showcase for Maryland’s Trimble, as the freshman proved to be almost unguardable, scoring 21 points, including 5-of-7 shooting from three point range. To send his team into the break, Trimble crossed MSU freshman guard Lourawls Nairn over and drilled his fifth triple of the half.

For the Spartans, Costello scored eight points to lead the team. Valentine and senior guard Travis Trice combined for just two points and five turnovers.
