MSU basketball will play Arizona at Pearl Harbor in Armed Forces Classic in 2016

November 14, 2014

MSU will play against Arizona and Kansas will play Indiana in a doubleheader as part of the fifth annual Armed Forces Classic in 2016. The game will happen close to the 75th anniversary of Japan’s Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

"To be able to play in the Armed Forces Classic for a second time is certainly an honor not only for the Spartan basketball program, but also Michigan State University,?" men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo said in a released statement. "?We'?ve been fortunate to play in some unbelievable events over the years, but the opportunity to play at Pearl Harbor is a unique opportunity. The chance to honor and entertain the current military members is amazing in itself, but the opportunity to be a part of the 75th Anniversary recognition of the attacks on Pearl Harbor is truly humbling."

Men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo has a past of getting involved with military, sometimes by playing games against the Army and Navy teams, other times by touring the academy. Izzo took a trip to Kuwait in 2005 to take part in the "Operation Hardwood -- Hoops with the Troops.” There he led the Camp Arifjan to base championship.

The Armed Forces Classic in 2016 will mark the fifth time MSU has played at a military site since 2011.

MSU opened their regular season on Friday at Navy.
