Block 'M' on U-M campus painted over in green in midst of rivalry week

October 22, 2014

The gold block 'M' symbol on the University of Michigan's campus was painted over in green and accompanied by a spray painted "S" and "U" next to it early Wednesday morning, according to the Michigan Daily.

The defacing of the U-M emblem, which is an iconic part of the Ann Arbor campus, comes in the midst of rivalry week.

For the second straight year, the Spartans will be taking on the Wolverines at home in East Lansing on Saturday, Oct. 25.

The Spartans have won the last five of the six games played against U-M.

This week often has members of both campus communities on edge. Members of the Spartan Marching Band have been guarding the bronze Sparty statue against any vandalism this week as part of an annual tradition.
