Activist banners appear around campus Wednesday morning in anticipation of protest

October 22, 2014

Banners were deployed from prominent locations around campus by the "Coalition to End Police Brutality" Wednesday morning, referencing the recent protests in Ferusgon, MO and Hong Kong, along with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The banners read,  “Indict Darren Wilson,” “Solidarity from Ferguson to Palestine” and “Student Power is Back, Join the Global Movement.”

The banners were released in an effort to rally support around a protest on campus that will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Beaumont Tower, the Rally to End Police Brutality.

The event has been organized by a number of different student groups including MSU Students United, North American Indigenous Student Organization and the Graduate Employees Union.

They appeared from high windows of Bessey Hall, Wells Hall, and the CATA Bus Station respectively, although it appears at least one of the banners has been taken down. The first banner was dropped at 10 a.m. according a statement from the coalition, and the next two were released at noon.

Jazz Studies and History junior Duncan Tarr, a organizer of the rally with MSU Students United denied responsibility for the banners, citing the "sketchy legality," of the banners although he said another student group may be doing this in support of the Rally to End Police Brutality at 3 p.m. today at Beaumont Tower, organized in part by MSU Students United.
