Suspect description released in Sunday stabbing

September 9, 2014

This weekend, partygoers were shocked when a confrontation turned physical. An MSU student was stabbed near the shared driveway of Campus View Apartments and the fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi.

At about 1:30 a.m. on September 7, yelling and a verbal confrontation was heard in the alleyway between the two buildings. A large crowd of people soon gathered and the confrontation became physical. As the crowd moved from the driveway onto the front lawn of the apartment complex, one student was stabbed in the lower back while trying to intervene. The authorities were on the scene almost immediately and the crowd dispersed.

The police were called at 1:34 a.m. and an eyewitness reports that two police cars, an ambulance and a fire truck pulled up to the Michigan Avenue block within minutes.

The victim was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi and was taken to Sparrow Hospital where he was held overnight, but is now “healthy and safe” according to the fraternity’s official statement on Facebook.

An unofficial statement from the fraternity identified the victim as 19-year-old Steven Lott, a premedical freshman.ap

Police have the weapon that was used in the stabbing, but did not take anyone into custody.

Police Capt. Jeff Murphy described the suspect as “a black male, approximately 6 foot 3 inches tall, estimated by witnesses to be in his 20s and was seen wearing a red hat backwards, gray sweatshirt and red jeans.”

The weapon was described by Murphy as a small “box-cutter-style razor blade.”

The official MSU Alert went out to students and families at around 2:45 a.m. informing them where the accident took place and that the area was secure. The information was sent out via text messages, automated phone calls and public posts on Twitter and Facebook.

Police are interviewing every witness they are aware of and encourage anyone who was at the party or may have information about the suspect to contact them.
