Reclaimed art on exhibit at LookOut! Art Gallery

April 10, 2014

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Until April 19, the RCAH LookOut! Art Gallery will display an exhibit of reclaimed art.

The artwork is actually reused material that was thrown away by somebody else and “reclaimed” by artists.

The artists transform the thrown away material into works of abstract creations or they help preserve the usefulness of the material. Some artwork is digitally projected as well.

Artwork included a cow made from paper and plastic as well as different types of blankets made out of discarded silk. There were jeans patched together from different material, as well as a “pocket blanket” which was made out of old jeans.

Deon Foster, one of the artists featured in the gallery, created human figures out of plastic as a part of a digital computer installation. The figures are made out of department store plastic bags and Bounty plastic wrap.

Foster said that he created human-like avatars out of plastic because the bags had logos on them and people identify themselves with logos. He said art helps him understand life on a deeper level.

"(Art) gives you a deeper understanding of the world around you and what it means to be alive at that moment in your life,” Foster said.

Steve Baibak, preparator for the LookOut! Art gallery, said that the artists who contributed to the gallery included teachers, MSU graduates and residents from Lansing.

“Some people that were doing stuff with objects and materials are people who invest and are resourceful,” he said. “They all come do it for different reasons.”

The art gallery is open Monday through Friday, 12 to 3 p.m., with the exception of 12 to 2:45 p.m. hours on Thursdays.
