According to a statement from the MSU Police, some MSU
employees using direct deposit noticed unauthorized changes to their account
information April 1.
Police said an MSU NetID and password were used to hack into
the accounts, where the perpetrator modified personal information in the
payroll system. Police believe this information was obtained by a phishing
attack, which often happens when a person clicks on an email link to fake
website.
Police do not believe that the security breach is
system-wide.
The attempted theft is currently being investigating and police
are encouraging anyone who suspects that their banking accounts or information
have been tampered with to call
517-355-2222.
Online scamming attacks are on the rise at universities
across the country. To combat this, MSU offers safety tips to avoid phishing
attacks at http://tech.msu.edu/secureIT.
