Men's tennis splits weekend matches

The men’s tennis team improved their record to 9-13 overall, winning against Wisconsin b ut losing to Minnesota t his weekend.

Snapping a losing streak from April 4 and 6 against Illinois and Northwestern, the Spartans defeated their third ranked team this season — the No. 74 Badgers — 4-3 in Madison, Wis., t hen lost against No. 55 Minnesota, 5-2, o n Sunday for their sixth conference loss of the season.

Senior Aaron Pfister a nd freshman Brett Forman w on their doubles match on both days — they have won their last three matches in a row, i mproving their record to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten Conference.

Pfister and Forman blew by Wisconsin’s Michael Sinha a nd Elliott Sprecher an d Minnesota’s Juan Pablo Ramirez a nd Franz Sydow, winning both,  8-1.

With the help and win by senior Drew Lied and sophomore John Mullane in the doubles match, MSU clinched the doubles point against Wisconsin — where juniors Harry Jadun a nd Gijs Linders m ade it a three-match win Spartan sweep.

In the Minnesota match, the Spartans did not get the doubles point.

In singles, the team won three of six matches to  beat the Badgers. Forman picked up his 12th win of the season, defeating Sprecher 6-1,6-2. He leads the team in wins. Jadun and Pfister also won their singles matches. Pfister got his 10th win of the season. H e has a conference record of 3-1, a nd the win clinched the match for MSU.

In Minneapolis, Minn. on Sunday, MSU won only two of the six matches. Mu llane and Linders won against Minnesota’s Eric Frueh 6-1, 6-4, but it was not enough for the Spartans to win the overall match. Linders picked up his 11th win of the spring season and fourth of the conference.

Returning home for their final two regular-season matches, the Spartan face No. 36 Purdue at 4 p.m. on Friday and No. 69 Indiana at noon on Sunday.

On the following weekend, MSU will host the Big Ten Tournament on April 24-27.
