Men's golf preparing for weekend invitational; women's golf coming off 3 wins

April 10, 2014

The No. 20 women's golf team went 3-0 this weekend, defeating Texas A&M, Georgetown and No. 22 Iowa State at the Liz Murphey Invitational this weekend, while the men's team prepares for the Hawkeye Invitational on at 9 a.m. on both April 12 and 13.

Coming from placing 13th of 15th at the Linger Longer Invitational on March 22-23, the men's team heads to Iowa City, Iowa for their second-to-last invitational before the Big Ten Championships. No. 5 Georgia upset No. 1 Alabama, getting first at the Linger Longer Invitational.

The women's Liz Murphey Invitational was different than most matches — Friday was a traditional stroke play loop, with the results creating a pair of match play brackets for Saturday and Sunday. The top eight teams were seeded in the "Red" bracket and the remaining teams in the "Black" bracket, where MSU tied for ninth during a stroke play part of the tournament, shooting 19-over-par 307.

No. 1 USC won the "Red" bracket.

MSU came back strong on Sunday to beat the Aggies in the "Black" championship match after defeating the Hoyas and the No. 22 Cyclones on Saturday.

Senior Liz Nagel went 3-0 this past weekend, and teammate freshman Kelly Grassell won her second match of the tournament, but did not finish the third, because the Spartans had already won against Georgetown.

The women's team will play again at the Lady Buckeye Invitational on April 19-20 — the last match before the Big Ten Tournament.
