MSU, city officials reflect on student death in Friday's shooting

Following the death of hospitality business sophomore Dominique Nolff, local officials have expressed their condolences for those affected by Friday night’s shooting on Cedar Street.

Nolff and another student were shot at about 8:45 p.m. Friday night on the 200 block of Cedar Street. One student was released from Sparrow Hospital early Saturday morning, but Nolff died a few hours later, officials at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing confirmed.

MSU officials have issued statement about the incident in support of the family and friends of the victim as well as police conducting the investigation.

MSU stands by to assist the East Lansing Police Department, who is leading the investigation and have said the incident is not a random act,” MSU spokesman Kent Cassella said in a statement. “For those in the campus community who may be personally affected by this tragedy, resources are available at the MSU counseling center.”

East Lansing Mayor Nathan Triplett passed along his condolences to the affected parties as well.

“It’s a terrible and senseless tragedy for our community and for Michigan State University, and my thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victims and those who were impacted by the act of gun violence,” Triplett said. “The investigation in ongoing, and East Lansing Police Department are working tirelessly to investigate the shooting and apprehend the assailant.”

Police described the suspect as a black male of average height and build between the age of 20-25, who was last seen wearing tan pants, a black coat and black shoes.
