MSU down by 2 to Texas at halftime

December 21, 2013

After another slow start, No. 5 MSU is trailing Texas 38-36 at halftime.

Just like in their loss against North Carolina, the Spartans started the game on a sour note with the big men.

It took junior forward Alex Gauna less than two minutes to draw two fouls – something MSU didn’t need with sophomore forward Matt Costello out due to illness. Schilling has two fouls to his name as well.

However, the afternoon hasn’t been awful for every big man, as senior forward Adreian Payne leads the game with 14 points.

Texas kicked off the game going to its big man Cameron Ridley, who helped Texas jump to an early 11-4 lead.

Ridley, who finished the half with 13 points and five rebounds, was also a factor in drawing MSU fouls that allowed Texas to reach the bonus with 11:33 left in the half.

That has allowed the Longhorns, who are shooting 61.4 percent from the line all season, to shoot an uncharacteristic 11-of-13 from the stripe.

Gary Harris, who is playing in his first game since facing UNC on Dec. 4, has four points on one-of-three shooting from the field.
