Spartans to host Illinois for three-game series

May 3, 2013

It has been a week since the MSU baseball team took the field against Big Ten competition, and as the conference season winds down every series matters for the fifth-place Spartans.

In the last home series of the season, MSU (24-13 overall, 7-5 Big Ten) welcomes sixth-place Illinois (26-13, 8-7) with game one set for 3:05 p.m. on Friday.

On Wednesday, the Spartans were handed a 10-2 loss by the Lansing Lugnuts in an annual exhibition matchup that was rescheduled from April 11.

The Illini should test the MSU pitching staff as the second-best hitting team in the Big Ten. They collectively hit .307 which is led by senior Justin Parr’s .436 batting average which leads the conference by a wide margin.

The second and third games are scheduled for 1:05 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Following the Illinois series, the Spartans will be in McLane Baseball Stadium at Old College Field one last time for a 3:05 p.m. showdown with Eastern Michigan.

MSU is 8-3 so far this season in its home facility.
