During Friday’s game against No. 12 Indiana, senior outfielder Jordan Keur tore his left Achilles’ tendon while rounding first base and limped into second base before collapsing.

Keur was attended to by trainers for several minutes before being helped off the field. From there, Keur was taken to the Duffy Daugherty Football Building and looked at by MSU team orthopedic surgeon Michael Shingles, who confirmed the Achilles’ tendon tear to the MSU staff.

“When I hit first base, I just felt this sensation come over my foot and it felt like my heel had been cut off,” Keur said Saturday. “When I went to land, I kind of collapsed and got back up. I wear this shin guard and I felt, for some reason, I was stepping on my shin guard but I wasn’t.

“That’s when I knew something had gone wrong.”

After the game Saturday, Keur said he’s scheduled for surgery Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the season. The recovery time for Keur is at least six months and could take as long as a year, which likely will impact both MSU’s lineup and Keur’s professional future.

The Spartans also lost senior catcher/infielder John Martinez to a torn knee ligament on March 9 in a victory against then-No. 7 Kentucky.

However, because of how early in the season the injury occurred, Martinez can apply for a medical redshirt, while Keur’s injury signals the end of his MSU career.

“My heart goes out to Jordan Keur,” MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said Friday, fighting back tears. “The kid is done in a Michigan State uniform. Such a good kid and you lose your captain and stuff hurts. I know it was tough for him, it was tough for his parents, tough for all of us. I told our guys that we have a job to represent him now. He’ll never put that uniform on again and it’s
a shame.”
