MSU hockey wins opening game of CCHA playoffs against Alaska, 2-1

The MSU hockey team picked up a win in the first game of the CCHA playoffs with a 2-1 defeat of Alaska on the road Saturday night.

Spartan sophomore forward Tanner Sorenson kicked the match off with a goal less than 30 seconds into the game, but Alaska’s Cody Kunyk tied the game on a delayed MSU penalty with about five minutes to play in the first frame.

The game eventually headed to overtime, and freshman forward Matt DeBlouw pulled out the win for the Spartans after going 12 games without a goal. His tally came three minutes into the extra period, with assists from freshman forward Ryan Keller and sophomore forward Matt Berry.

Junior netminder Will Yanakeff got the nod for MSU and had 34 saves; Alaska goaltender John Keeney stopped 13.

The two teams meet again Saturday night, with the puck dropping at 11:05 p.m. Eastern time. If Alaska wins, the series will go to a third game to take place at 11:05 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday.
