Oxford, OhioMSU hockey started Saturday’s CCHA playoff game in a similar fashion as Friday’s win: with a goal by freshman forward Matt DeBlouw from junior linemate Greg Wolfe.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, that was the extent of the similarities between the two games.

Miami (Ohio) turned up the volume Saturday night and defeated MSU, 4-1, warranting a third game in the best-of-three series.

DeBlouw’s goal was scored on a power play after Miami (Ohio) defenseman Steven Spinell took an indirect contact to the head penalty for a hit on MSU senior forward Kevin Walrod.

The RedHawks scored two goals within about two and a half minutes in the first period. The first was a deflection by forward Jimmy Mullin from a shot by defenseman Matthew Caito from the point.

Their second goal came as a result of an MSU turnover behind the Spartan net during an MSU power play. An MSU defenseman fumbled the puck, and bodies were flailing in front of MSU freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand until the puck was poked in by forward Austin Czarnik.

The only goal of the second period was a Miami (Ohio) one, a wrister by Cody Murphy. The game was topped off with Czarnik’s second goal of the night, coming about midway through the third.

The two will meet in a deciding game three at 7:05 p.m. Sunday night, in which the winner will advance to the CCHA semifinals at Joe Louis Arena next weekend.
