Bike lane renovations, other projects discussed at Construction Junction meeting

February 17, 2013

Engineers and various committee members announced the start and finish dates of construction projects and their expected price tags at MSU’s monthly Construction Junction meeting Thursday.

With multiple projects looming around the corner, contractors and engineers work quickly to finish last minute details of various projects and plan around the school season.

All-University Traffic and Transportation Committee
The AUTTC is looking to better the pedestrian safety issues of East Lansing by channeling the New York safety haiku advertising campaigns. With the message, “Good for NY, good for MSU,” and haikus such as, “Imagine a work where your movements matter. Welcome to that world,” in mind, the AUTTC considered launching multiple, short advertising campaigns promoting pedestrian awareness of biking safety and late night walking safety.

The AUTTC hopes to use safety-promoting acronyms that will resonate with students and East Lansing residents. As part of the advertising campaign, the AUTTC plans to run short campaigns at CATA bus shelters, located at multiple bus stops, as well as in busses.

Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)
MDOT is planning a construction project along Grand River Avenue and Michigan Avenue that will begin March 13 and finish Oct. 13.

The project, which stretches about four miles, has an estimated price tag of $6 million for the four-stage project. Changes include a renovated bike lane on Michigan Avenue, sidewalk updates and a resurfaced M-43. Traffic delays and lane reductions are expected to create traffic delays between two to 15 minutes.

Other topics discussed at the meeting were the unused benefit many AUTTC members have of free CATA transportation for on-campus travel, as well as planning and maintenance of bicycle and moped parking areas on campus between the Physical Plant and academic area.

Committee members also gave progress updates on road reconstruction of the West Circle steam loop, the Music Building Electrical Substation and renovations to the Auditorium.

Upcoming MSU Physical Plant Division meeting dates are set for March 14 and April 11, located in Room 112 in Brody Hall and May 9. The May 9 meeting’s location is to be determined.
