Thirteen state Senate Republicans introduced a new bill Thursday that would free guns and ammunition made in Michigan from federal regulations.
The Michigan Firearms Freedom Act applies to firearms and accessories manufactured without any significant parts from another state, according to the bill.
The bill states materials, such as unshaped wood or unmachined steel, are not considered guns, and therefore not subjected to federal regulation as guns under interstate commerce.
The bill’s introduction comes just days after President Barack Obama issued 23 executive orders to reinforce gun background check systems and ban military-style assault weapons.
Guns protected by the bill must be stamped with “Made in Michigan,” and will apply to guns made in the state after Oct. 1. The bill does not apply to guns that cannot be held by one person or guns that project chemical explosions.
