Broad Art Museum to host party Saturday

January 9, 2013

With the first weekend of the semester quickly approaching, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum wants MSU students to turn their attention to Saturday night. That’s when the museum will be hosting its own shindig, welcoming back the student body and showcasing MSU’s newest museum, according to the museum’s manager of education, Leyna Lightman.

“The primary (reason for the party) is as a new organization, we want to reach out to the community and make them feel at home here,” Lightman said. “It’s kind of a ‘welcome back to school’ thing.”

The party runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 547 East Circle Drive, and is free to all students with a valid ID. There will be DJs for entertainment, as well as snacks and drinks, according to the museum’s website. There also will be opportunities to take photos and color in posters.

Lightman said the party is geared toward educating MSU and its students about what kinds of things the museum can provide beyond the normal exhibits, such as live music and performers, in an effort to bring in more students as members.

“We have lots of programming geared toward students,” Lightman said. “This is their excuse to come and see what we have.”

Lightman said she thinks the museum will likely make the welcome back party an annual event. This party will not be the only outreach event of the year, but no specific future events have been officially planned as of yet.

“There will be more, but we don’t know (what they are) yet,” Lightman said. “But this one is just a pure party.”
