An eastbound CATA bus was evacuated and traffic was halted on Grand River Avenue at the Division Street intersection for about 15 minutes around 4:30 p.m.

More than 30 people were evacuated from the bus and an MSU police K-9 unit searched the interior and exterior of the vehicle.

Several East Lansing police officers were on the scene and East Lansing police Lt. Tom Vanderwoude addressed the passengers, who gathered in front of Berkey Hall.

Vanderwoude said the department received a reported threat of “something suspicious” and the officers wanted to make sure the bus was safe before allowing passengers back on the bus.

Police would not give specific details on the threat.

Two young men who were passengers on the bus were questioned and taken away in the back seat of one of the patrol cars. Neither were in handcuffs and it was unclear if they were arrested.

After the bus was inspected, passengers boarded again and the bus resumed its original route. The street also was reopened for normal traffic.
