The new director for the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum is on the job and museum construction is going as planned, said to Linda Stanford, associate provost for academic services.
Michael Rush, the contemporary art museum’s newly-named director, began his position at MSU last week, and a campus welcome was held for him Monday at Wharton Center, she said.
He already has flown to Los Angeles as part of a fundraising trip and to meet with the museum’s namesake couple, Eli and Edythe
Broad, Stanford said.
The pair have donated a total of $28 million toward the $40 million total cost.
Rush now is focusing on the budget, hiring staff and working on programs he will develop for the museum’s opening in 2012, Stanford said.
Once the art museum opens next year, the Kresge Art Museum’s collection will be combined with it, she said.
“The university’s art museum will be the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum,” Stanford said.
“How the (Kresge Art Museum) space will be used — that is still to be determined.”
The walls for the new art museum have been erected 60 percent and the construction team currently is fabricating the structural
steel for the project, Stanford said.
All building plans are progressing according to schedule and construction staff is continuing to work despite the winter weather, she said.
