Taking the Polar Plunge

Jumpers dressed in pirate costumes, MSU gear and a bevy of other outfits braved temperatures in the teens Sunday for the fifth-annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge at Hawk Hollow Golf Course, 15101 Chandler Road, in Bath, Mich. About 250 jumpers and a few hundred spectators took part in the event, where people dove into frigid waters for a few seconds. About $63,000 was raised for Special Olympics Michigan operations in the Greater Lansing area.

Michigan State astrophysics senior Amir Ouyed (left) talks with Bill Roberts of the LaRouche political action committee. Roberts and others were on campus talking with students about their plans to change the country after President Barack Obama is out of office, largely through the North American Water and Power Alliance. Through NAWAPA, the group plans to reroute water from northwestern Canada and Alaska to northern Mexico in hopes of making the land less arid and more easily farmed.

About 350 student organizations set up booths during the event as part of the Fall Welcome Spartan Spectacular, which also featured a cook-out dinner, pep rally and fireworks display.
