MSU pitcher Tony Bucciferro was named co-Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his performance in an 11-4 win over No. 21 St. John’s on Friday in Dunedin, Fla.
The senior right-hander delivered six scoreless innings while striking out six and giving up just one hit. Head coach Jake Boss said it might have been the best game he’s ever seen from Bucciferro, who retired the first 13 batters he faced.
Bucciferro shared the honor with Lance Breedlove of Purdue.
Last season, Bucciferro was second in the rotation behind Kurt Wunderlich, but he enters this season as the Spartans’ No. 1 pitcher. He went 8-3 in 15 starts and accumulated a 3.38 ERA during the 2011 season.
The honor is the second of its kind for Bucciferro, who earned the accolade for his complete game shutout against Minnesota on April 11, 2011. He will take the mound again this weekend when MSU (1-2) travels to Greenville, S.C., for the First Pitch Invitational.
