Early notes from Coach D's U-M presser

By: Matt Bishop Posted: 09/29/09 2:58pm

MSU head coach Mark Dantonio held his weekly press conference Tuesday at Spartan Stadium in preparation for Saturday’s game against Michigan.

The Wolverines (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) are coming off a late 36-33 win over Indiana on Saturday while the Spartans (1-3 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) have lost three in a row, the latest coming in a 38-30 loss to Wisconsin on Saturday.

Dantonio held a rare Sunday practice in response to Saturday’s loss and it appears it has gotten his team on track.

“Things have been very, very positive,” Dantonio said. “It was a good practice. Guys were flying around, excited about the entire week.”

As for U-M, Dantonio complimented Wolverines quarterback Tate Forcier, who has led the team to two late wins against Notre Dame and Indiana as a true freshman.

“They’re operating on all gears,” Dantonio said.

Dantonio also was complimentary toward U-M head coach Rich Rodriguez, who has taken a 3-9 squad from his first year and turned it into a 4-0 squad so far this season.

“It’s very, very important to recognize that coach Rodriguez has done an outstanding job here in the past year and a half,” Dantonio said. “He’s got it turned, they’re playing very, very well and he needs to be complimented for that.”

Personnel file

With the secondary struggling, many have wondered about the whereabouts of sophomore cornerback Johnny Adams, who started two games last season as a true freshman.

Adams missed the Notre Dame game to attend his grandmother’s funeral and dressed but did not play against Wisconsin because Dantonio said he was still considering a redshirt for Adams this season.

“Last week, we went into the situation saying we would hold him,” Dantonio said. “I’m not sure we’ll do that this week. I think we’ll play him.”
