Photos from 'Things Organized Neatly' turn chaos into composition

By Meagan Choi          Posted: 09/26/11 8:39am

Whether or not they’ll admit it, most designers — including myself — tend to be control freaks. Perfect alignment and white space are equivalent to godliness, and heaven forbid that a quotation mark wouldn’t be optically aligned.

Perhaps this is why Things Organized Neatly, a Tumblr curated by Austin Radcliffe, speaks to my obsessive-compulsive tendencies. People submit photos of any assortment of objects in same fashion as the title, whether it’s pieces of foam core or baking ingredients.

I could flip through the hundreds of pages for hours, marveling at the images that become studies in asymmetry and genius organization. Studying the compositions almost serves as a reprieve from the busyness of life and a contrast to the chaos of my closet and even Apple MacBook desktop.

Who would’ve thought that a disassembled typewriter could become such a work of art?

Another one of my favorites is the color-organized set of bookshelves.

It’s nearly enough to make me want to try keeping my bedroom clean for longer than a day. But sometimes, looking is more than enough.
