Some activity in E.L. includes couch burnings, but mostly quiet
Following the men’s basketball team loss in the Sweet 16 on Thursday night, a number of small disturbances broke out in city streets and in Cedar Village which were quickly put down by police.
A man set fire to a small pile of wood on River Street just after 10 p.m. and was immediately arrested by East Lansing Police as he tried to run inside a nearby house. Groups of students from nearby houses heckled police as the man was taken into custody.
Minutes later, East Lansing police arrived behind the neighborhood’s main parking structure to douse a burning couch. It was not clear whether there were any arrests.
Police were not immediately available for comment.
Crowds gathered in nearby streets dissipated as they were met by a heavy police presence.

A recliner chair fire sprang up on Elizabeth and Division streets at about 10:25 p.m. Another furniture fire occurred at the intersection of Charles and Beech streets at about 11:25 p.m.
Reports coming in on the police scanner quieted down by midnight, and there have been no new reported incidents.
