Women's soccer advances to Big Ten Tournament semifinal with shootout win

In a penalty kick situation, there are few goalkeepers better than senior goalkeeper Jill Flietstra.

After 110 minutes of play, Flietstra made a pair of critical saves on penalty kicks to give the No. 3 seeded MSU women’s soccer team the 4-3 shootout win against No. 6 seeded Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament.

Junior forward Olivia Stander, senior forward Laura Heyboer, junior defender Kelsey Kassab and sophomore defender Annie Steinlage netted consecutive goals in the shootout to advance MSU into the second round of the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2005.

With a trip to the championship on the line, MSU moves on to the semifinals to play No. 2 Illinois, which also won in penalty kicks against Ohio State, at 2:15 p.m. Friday in Evanston, Ill.
