Simon addresses on-campus racial slurs, students to hold town hall meeting

October 4, 2011

Following a series of racial incidents throughout campus, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon sent an email to students this afternoon addressing her concern for the well-being of the community.

Controversy first arose after a racial slur was found on a student’s dry erase board hung outside a dorm room in Akers Hall. Shortly after, another racial slur and sexually explicit graphics were found on the walls of a different residential hall, according to the email sent by Simon.

“It should go without saying that the University supports free speech including the use of words that are offensive to most in our community.” Simon said in the email. “However, given the nature of these incidents, the MSU police were immediately contacted and the matter has been turned over to them to investigate, not only as a form of vandalism, but also as a potential ethnic intimidation.”

MSU Police Sgt. McGlothian-Taylor confirmed police officials are investigating the incidents.

The recent events will be discussed during a town hall meeting at 7:45 p.m. tonight at Conrad Hall by several student organizations including the Black Student Alliance.
